Setting up Mobicip on Chromebooks - Connecting profiles and devices

Forums:

  • Technical Support

So our kids have chrome accounts that they were assigned at school - they are using Chromebooks for school work.  This means they have a google account that is associated with their school accounts.  Wht th e got the kids Chromebooks for Christmas and are setting them up with parental controls.  We were excited to see that you support Chromebooks as there are very limited options out there.  So we bought your premium service and tried setting it up.  We followed the instructions on Chromebooks and I can see in our account that there is a profile for child A and a profile for child B which I can modify with the settings I want for each of them - great.  I also see that there is a device showing for them (which is their school email address).  However I cannot get these two to link.  So there is a profile and a device but they are not connected.  I looked through all of your tech support articles and questions and I only found one thing related that was helpful.  I followed the instructions to go into the device (so I am on the Chromebook for child A) and I log in as them (with their school email) and open a Chrome browser window.  From that window I can click on the mobicip icon on the top right corner of the window.  Then I am given the option to "Change Filter Profile" when I click on this I am prompted to enter my parent username and password - I do that and then I am given the option to select the profile.  I do that and .........nothing!  I log out and log back in......nothing! Still no connection between my devices and my profiles?  No restrictions, no monitoring..... My end goal here is I want to be able to have a profile for Child A and Child B and I want to assign Chromebook A login account (which is an email address) to be attached to the Child A profile and then same for Child B and Chromebook B login account.

I am trying to troubleshoot this on my own So I tried creating a brand new google account and adding that user to the Chromebook.  I then selected the user profile for Child A on Chromebook A so this time with the new google account (NOT the school gmail).  And I can now see activity for that email address/account under Mobicip but it is not under Child A it is under my parent email address!

I hope you see the problem in the above explanation but regardless here are some of the basic questions I am having simplified:

1) Is there a problem with using a school email address to log in - so this means when they log into the device it is through that school Chrome account/email - is that a problem?

2) Is there a way to go into my Mobicip account and assign certain devices to certain profiles?  My understanding from you articles and answers is that it is done through the device - yet that isn't working either.

3) Why does my child's device not connect to their profile even after I have set the profile on the device?

Solved!

Okay so we figured this out.  The email address we were using as our login for the Chromebook was the gmail address my children got at school.  This gmail account is "managed" by the school.  Thank you Mobicip for the clarification that we cannot use a login address for our Chromebook that is linked to a "managed" account.  In other words it can't be managed by two different sources either Mobicip or the school.  FYI whatever management the school does with the google account doesn't extend beyond the school site (where they have a strict firewall in place).  In other words I can use the school managed account to login online at home and access everything on the internet - no protection is in place.

So we created a new google account for each child.  Then I disabled all other login options for the Chromebook except my owner account and the new google account I just made.  I followed the Mobicip instructions for setting up Mobicip on a Chromebook (still a issue with one of the steps not working) and it worked!  My childs Chromebook device is now linked to the correct profile and filtering is working!

The conclusion here is that you need to make sure the Chrome account you are using to log in to your device is not "managed" by another source or it will not allow any of the Mobicip services to work.

I am having the same issue.

I am having the same issue.  Given the chromebook is managed by the school, I am unable to login using a newly created google account (I receive a "you are not authorized to use this device" message).  Did you receive similar messages, and if so, can you provide a little detail on how you were able to login?  Thanks!

Re: I am having the same issue.

Hello Luke
Please note that Mobicip solution for Chromebook is related to user accounts. In other words, one Google account can be managed only by one admin/owner. In case your kids accounts are already linked with and managed by the School admin or anyone else, parents will not be able to manage/monitor that account at home. This setup is designed by Google. You will need to discuss with your child's school about this.

Re: I have the same problem as

Hello Sarah
Please note that the device - child user mapping has to be done at your end on the device itself. Please click on the Mobicip extension icon and you should see 'Change Filter Profile' option there.
