MobiCip Does a Horrible Job

Posted: Mon, 03/30/2009 - 08:57

I tested MobiCip on blocking explicit porn images, and it failed horribly.  It allows access to all different types of image search engines and only blocks the most obvious terms.  If you search for names of playboy playmates, or "shower babe" you get tons of results, which lead to sites with more explicit images.  Sometimes MobiCip would block the page, but not the images from the page.  I was very disappointed.  I don't know of a good solution for the iphone.  I am going to try the other applications, but they have not gotten great reviews.

Filtering Not Up to Snuff

I think that the filtering is equally bad going the other way. I set my daughter's IPOD touch for "elementary school" and now she's not even able to access innocuous, elementary school-oriented sites like Webkinz and Build-a-Bear.

Just as bad, when you can't get to one of those pages, you get the message to go to Mobicip's site to make the changes and then you discover the only way you can let your daughter have access to legitimate elementary school aged sites is to pay an annual fee of $9.99!!

Sorry, but this is just outstandingly BAD!! (We'll see how long you choose to leave my comment up, given that I'm not exactly endorsing your product.

We are sorry for the trouble you are having. As we mentioned earlier, Mobicip's filtering policy is based on filtering settings used by US K-12 schools. While this is very effective most of the time, many users have specific websites that they would like to be allowed or blocked.

For instance, the site you mentioned pokemon.com falls under the category 'Games', which is blocked by default at elementary school level. Changing your filtering level to Middle or High School should fix the problem. But you have mentioned that the website is not allowed even at Middle and High School level. Please note that, once you change the filtering level for the child user in the web monitor, you may need to wait for 30-45 mins for the change to take effect on the device.

Please check and let us know if the website is allowed fine now. In case the problem still persists, please let us know and we will investigate further asap.

Filtering policy explained

We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble using Mobicip. Mobicip's filtering policy is based on filtering settings used by US K-12 schools. Please note that Mobicip is actually being used by several schools at different levels. While the general settings are very effective most of the time, many users have specific websites that they would like to be allowed or blocked.

For instance, the site you are trying to access may be classified as an online gaming site, which is blocked for the elementary school level.

However, there are a couple of options here:

- Set the filtering level to Middle School. Many benign online gaming sites are allowed for the Middle School level.

- A Mobicip.com Premium subscription allows the account owner to configure the filtering to suit specific requirements. The account owner could add the website to the whitelist, and the site will be allowed.

If you continue to have problems, please contact us at support(at)mobicip.com. Customer satisfaction is very important to us and we will make sure that your concerns are addressed.

Not that poor with the right filtering level

We believe your filtering level is set to High School, which is the least restrictive. Please select the Elementary filtering level and most of your concerns should be addressed.

Meanwhile, we are working on optimizing our filtering for the high school level to capture some of the type of content you mention.

Image search issues

Mobicip's intelligent real-time filtering engine relies on the text-based content, tags, and meta information on a website or webpage to determine its appropriateness. Some parents have reported that searches for seemingly benign phrases like "beach volleyball" can result in some images showing up in the results. However, if you actually try to visit the website, it is blocked in most cases. We are also working on preventing images from appearing in the search results by enforcing Safe Search always, at least for Google.

However, we wish to thank you for your feedback and assure you that we are working on evolving our filtering to meet the challenge. Object analysis, especially media, is not an easy problem to solve, but not impossible either.

We will keep this forum posted on the improvements we make.

Image search issues

If mobicip webfilter allows to select the site categories you want to block, you can block 'visual search engine' category.

so image.google.com (which belongs to this category) will be blocked

and you won't have images in the results at all.

Not Possible

There is no 'visual' search engine category. Only search engine, which blocks google. It is possible to block all images on a regular web browser, why not on an iPhone web browser.
