From the home screen on the device, touch the App Store icon.

Touch the search tab, and search for "mobicip"

Select the Mobicip Safe Browser from the search results.

Touch the price button, it will turn into BUY NOW. Touch this button and enter your iTunes username and password.

NOTE: Please make sure you purchase the app from your iTunes account, even though your child may have a separate iTunes account to which the device is regularly synced with.
Once purchased, the app will be installed on your screen.

When installation is done, touch the Mobicip icon to launch the app.

If you don't have a Mobicip.com account already, touch the Create New Account button.

Once the account is created, login into the app. You should see the browser open up like this.

Visit www.mobicip.com from your PC to upgrade to the Mobicip.com Premium web application. Mobicip.com Premium is a web-based parental control application that can be accessed from any browser. General Parental Control Restrictions Setup
From the home screen, select Settings > General.
Select Restrictions
Enter a 4-digit passcode. Make sure you remember this passcode, in case you need to change these settings.
l
You will see the restrictions screen. Set Safari, YouTube, and Installing Apps to OFF on this screen.
NOTE: Some parents may choose to allow apps to be installed with age restrictions setup, but be aware that there are still issues with the age-based ratings and browsing the App Store itself.
UPDATE: With iOS 4.2, Apple has added additional features to make the restrictions even more useful. If you have upgraded already, please do so now. iOS 4.2 includes an option to prevent the deletion of apps installed by the parent or administrator.

In another much sought after enhancement, Apple has added an option to disallow email accounts from being setup. Whether you have setup a child-friendly email service like Zilladog or Zoobuh, or you simply want to turn off email access, this gives you the ability to lock email accounts and not allow your child to setup an alternate email account. Simply scroll down on the same Restrictions screen to setup this option.

We believe that these are valuable additions and that there is enough reason to upgrade your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to iOS 4.2.
Scroll down the screen to the Allowed Content area.
Set In-App Purchases to OFF.
Select Music & Podcasts. Set Explicit to OFF.
Select Movies. Select the rating you would like to allow.
Select TV Shows. Select the rating you would like to allow.
Select Apps. Select age-based filtering for apps you would like to allow.
Select Ratings For to change your location if necessary.
Hit the Home button to return the home screen.
NOTE: If you have multiple devices to setup, see this article.
That is it! You can be rest assured that your child will have a safe and secure Internet enabled device that he/she can use anytime anywhere!

8 comments postedI followed the instructions above to purchase your browser from my iphone, so I can test it out before using it for my son's phone. The mobicip icon appears on my iphone and says "Waiting" and then disappears. I"ve done this twice (and I assume have paid twice) with the same results. No sign of it anywhere on my iphone. Please advise. Thanks.
We are sorry for the trouble you are having. Please scroll through the multiple screens on your device and make sure that Mobicip is not hidden in one of them. If you have folders, please check the folders as well. Another way to check if Mobicip is on your device is to go to the 'Search' screen and type in Mobicip. The app will be displayed in the search results if it's installed on the device.
In case you cannot find the app, it is very easy to restore Mobicip from the App Store for no additional charge. Please launch the App Store app on the device and search for Mobicip. Touch the $4.99 button and select BUY. Use the same iTunes account that was used to purchase Mobicip before, and you will not be charged for the repurchase.
If the download process again takes a long time to complete, then we suggest that you contact iTunes regarding the same. You may contact Apple through this website

Please let us know if this answers your question and resolves the issue. Otherwise, we will be happy to assist further. Thank you for choosing Mobicip.

There is a discrepancy between this article and the knol version. At the stage where the Mobicip app is puchased, the knol advises that the iTunes account for the transaction should be that of the child, whereas in the above article is states that the account should be the parent's.
So which is correct?
I am guessing the knol is correct, since this would make sense in terms of apps syncing to the iPod.
I found this article through an email that said, "The native Google and Bing apps are incorrectly rated at 4+ on the App Store, and this is what you can do to block them:
======================
I cannot find how to turn off Google Maps app. You might be refering to Google Mobile, but this email says that it is possible to delete native apps. How is this done? I need to delete the Maps app.
By native Google app and Bing app, we meant the apps that are released by Google and Microsoft. We do not believe that it is possible to delete Google maps from your device. You will be able to prevent Google maps from identifying your location by launching the Settings app and going to Location Services and turning Google maps to off, but you will still have Google maps on your device. We will post an update to this forum post if we find otherwise and if there is a way to delete Google maps.

You are correct. Thanks for identifying this discrepancy. Apple has evolved the iTunes account features and we have tried to stay in sync, but it appears that these tutorials have been divergent. Please bear with us and we will correct it asap.
A device can be sync'ed with only one iTunes account at a time. If you sync the device with your own iTunes account, and your son or daughter tries to sync the device with his/her account later, he/she will be prompted to restore the device to factory settings before loading music, apps and settings from his iTunes account to the device.
If your son or daughter has a separate iTunes account that is sync'ed with the device, and it doesn't have a Credit Card associated with it, you could do one of two things to purchase Mobicip.
1. If you think you can handle it, the best option is to use the Home Sharing feature. Home Sharing allows you to purchase music and apps once and use it across multiple computers and iTunes libraries. The setup for this is a little bit involved. Please follow the instructions in this tutorial from Apple's support website.
2. The other option is to setup a gift card or a monthly allowance for your son/daughter's account. For more information, visit this Apple page.
If your child doesn't have an iTunes account already, you can create a new iTunes account and use a redeem code or a gift card in lieu of a credit card. Launch iTunes and sign in using your daughter's iTunes account. If you purchased a gift card, click the link that says "Redeem" at the top right of iTunes under Quick Links. Or simply click this link.
Once the account is setup, follow the instructions in this tutorial to setup Mobicip and other parental control restrictions on the device.
This page is also supposed to explain how to disable Safari and the App Store. It does not.
We apologize for the confusion caused. Actually, the steps to disable Safari and App store are mentioned in this page under the section - General Parental Control Restrictions Setup. The 15th screen shot from the top will show how to turn OFF the options 'Safari' and 'Installing Apps' (App store) in the device Settings.
