Filtering overly restrictive for some

Posted: Sun, 02/22/2009 - 03:44

Some websites may be unnecessarily blocked, dependent upon how much you trust your children and personal/cultural differences. Is there a way whereby settings can be individualised, or requests made to unblock them? For example, my son (early teens) likes to access the Lego websites. I cannot see anything here that would be considered offensive.

One of my son's iPod touches

One of my son's iPod touches - I had set to "Elementary" level and he told me that shop.lego.com was blocked (he likes to keep abreast of all the latest lego offerings). I added it to the white list and it was still being blocked.

We sincerely apologize for the trouble you are having. Once you whitelist a website, it may take up to 30 minutes for the change to reflect on the device. Your son should be able to visit the website without any issues by now. Please send us an email to Mobicip Support if the issue still persists and we will investigate further asap.

Okay so even after browsing these forums and switching my 8yr olds setting to high school, he still cant play miniclip games.  This seems ridiculous to me and then to continuly hear you just simply say "just upgrade to perimum" to answer pretty much any fintering question seems like one hell of a sales ploy.  I would like some real feedback for users like me who have you product on two of my childrens ipod touches and hate the over filtering.  My son has more freedom on the computers at his elementry school than he does with the highschool setting on your product. Thank you.

We are sorry for the trouble you are having. We tried miniclip.com on Mobicip and the website worked exactly like the way it worked on Safari. Please note that Adobe Flash is not supported on any of Apple's mobile devices. So, once you open up a specific Games' webpage, Adobe Flash plugin is required to play the game. Unfortunately, it is not available either on Mobicip or on Safari, the default web browser due to Apple's restrictions and for that matter on any other browser available for the device. This is a drawback on Apple's devices as many games websites require Adobe Flash and so, they do not work on the mobile devices.

Please let us know if there is any particular game on miniclip.com that works on Safari, but doesn't work on Mobicip and we will investigate the issue further asap. During our extensive testing, we did not come across such a scenario.

Also, if there is just one website that you would like to allow your child to use and it is blocked by Mobicip, we strongly recommend that you don't buy Mobicip's Premium subscription. Mobicip's premium subscription offers a lot more features like setting time limits for your child's Mobicip usage, monitoring internet activity on your child's device and receiving weekly email reports of internet activity in addition to allowing/blocking specific websites/website categories. We apologize if this was not clear to you.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance by sending an email to Mobicip Support and we will be happy to help.

My daughter likes to play games on Miniclip, but she cannot access it.  The reason comes up as "Ads".  Is there any way to byspass this block?  I have no problem allowing her to access this site. Susan

Yes, add the website to allowed websites

  • Tue, 12/22/2009 - 12:13

No problem. As a Premium user, you can always add the website to your list of allowed websites. Simply login at www.mobicip.com, select Settings > Websites > Allow. Add the domain name (like google.com) to the list. Allow 10-15 mins for the change to be propagated to all our servers.

You should be all set.

Inconsistent access

I'm a premium user, I've allowed gmail.com and starwars.com but sometimes it allows access and other times it doesn't. Why the inconsistency?

We are sorry for the trouble you are having.

There is a temporary glitch in the system that is causing some Premium users to be treated as non-Premium occasionally. This may cause some customized settings to not be applied consistently.

Please note that this happens to a handful of users, so if you contact supportATmobicip.com with your registered email address, we can determine if your account belongs to this group.

In any case, we expect the issue to be resolved soon, hopefully within a day or so. We will also update this thread as soon as the issue is resolved.

I agree, funbrain is a school approved website.

Does the filter allow more sites?

Kid-friendly sites allowed for all levels

  • Thu, 03/19/2009 - 16:33

Hello RodGlen and sww44993

Lego and funbrain is not blocked for any filtering level now. There was a problem early on where some sites were being categorized incorrectly and blocked. This problem has been fixed now.

Please let us know if you continue to see the same issue.

Thanks

is there any way to allow my son to access this site without upgrading to the premium account?  The website isn't offensive in nature and seems strange that it is blocked?  Any suggestions, Thanks.

Change Filtering Level To Allow More Sites

  • Tue, 01/12/2010 - 17:08

You are right. Upgrading to Premium is not the only option. This site is categorized as online gaming. Since we use school-recommended settings, online gaming is blocked by default for the Elementary filtering level. If you wish to allow this site, you can do so by

- upgrading to Mobicip.com Premium and adding the site to your whitelist. To upgrade to Premium, simply login at www.mobicip.com and click Upgrade Now.

OR

- changing your filtering level to Middle or High School level. To change your filtering level, login at www.mobicip.com and select Settings > Users. Allow a few minutes for the change to be propagated to our servers. Try again and the site should be allowed now.

Over-Filtering

I too am experiencing over-filtering. I've stopped using the product because when I've gone to use my sons Ipod Touch, I can't evens search Target.com. THe same has happened for other sites, even after moving his level up to middle school. In my opinion, the content filtering is WAY too restrictive, and as paying consumers, we should have more control over what gets blocked.

I have stopped using the product because of this and would have a hard time recommending it to anyone. What good is filtering if you can't get ANYWHERE? You should not have to buy a "premium" subscription to make up for a "sub-standard" product, IMHO.

Thanks.

Jim

Your criticism is mostly justified and we appreciate the feedback. As you know, Mobicip is built mainly with school filtering requirements in mind. Online shopping is something that schools block for Elementary and Middle school levels. However, we do understand that this one-size-fits-all solution doesn't work for everyone. We have two recommendations for you:

1. Set the filtering level to High School. This is the least restrictive filtering level, and still blocks inappropriate content.

2. If you feel that High School level is too restrictive, you may want to purchase the Premium subscription. This will allow to customize the filtering and allow any sites or categories of sites that you think are over-blocked.

Having said that, we do modify our filtering policy based on user feedback. If there a consensus that shopping sites should be allowed for Middle School level, we can change it. But most parents using Mobicip find the filtering adequate, and even when we hear about complaints of over-filtering, there is no pattern as to which category is being over-blocked.

Let us know if one of the recommendations above works for you. If it doesn't, we can look at other options to help you out.

google images

My son likes to look at images on Google, such as pictures of animals and maps.  Is there any way to unblock Google images?  I can't seem to find anything on this subject!

Thank you!

Re: google images

  • Fri, 04/08/2011 - 06:33

We are sorry for the trouble you are having. Google images are blocked by default at the elementary level. Our filtering policy team decided to block Google images for this level based on a significant number of requests from parents. Just to allow Google images, we do not recommend purchasing the Mobicip.com Premium subscription. We suggest that you change the filtering level to 'Middle school' for your son's device and your son can safely search for Google images on animals and maps. Even when his filtering level is set at middle school, please be assured that your son is safely browsing the internet and will not have access to inappropriate content as Mobicip filter will filter inappropriate content at all three filtering levels.

Better

Support. The Mobicip settings for high school seem better. I can at least access benign sites like Target.com, yet still get protection from the bad. Thanks.
